Heifer International: Microfinance and Philanthropy

Why have 60 Minutes, The West Wing, Oprah Winfrey, New York Times, Fast Company and CNN featured the work of microfinance pioneer Heifer International? Because Heifer International helped set the stage decades ago for the success of microfinance today.

Why have 60 Minutes, The West Wing, Oprah Winfrey, The New York Times, Fast Company and CNN featured the work of Heifer International?

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank, recently won the Nobel Peace Prize for his groundbreaking work in microfinance. Success stories on this front feature individuals receiving a $50 loan who were not only able to start a business but are also repaying the loan at 98%+ success rates! There has indeed been a great deal of news on the microfinance front over the past few years.

Join the Wharton Club of Northern California on Thursday, November 30th for a presentation by microfinance pioneer Heifer International. Heifer will present their business case and report on both their challenges and successes in the field. Discussion will include the future of microfinance, philanthropy, and marketing.

You may not have known that Heifer International helped set the stage--decades ago--for the success of microfinance today. Heifer gives livestock directly to the world's poor and trains them on growing a sustainable business from the resource. The revenue recipients make from things like goat's milk, sheep, wool, or chickens can pay for education, housing, and medicines. And Heifer's payment plan is unique. Recipients repay the "loan" of livestock and training by passing on the gift of their animal's offspring to others in need in the community.

Their training program is legendary in the developing world, and in addition to their unique philanthropy model, Heifer has mastered guerilla marketing here at home. While most nonprofits struggle with single digit growth rates, Heifer has been growing at 20% to 30% annually for the past ten years, much of it coming online.
