Breakfast with Dr. Art Caplan, Penn Center for Bioethics

Biobanking, Genomics, & Genetic Engineering: Where are we headed, and what rules should take us there?
A Saturday morning breakfast presentation with Arthur Caplan, Ph.D.

Recent advances in biomedical research and genetic engineering are fueling an increasingly clamorous moral battle in American politics. Our country is deeply divided on the fundamental religious and moral values concerning biobanking and genetic research. Where are we headed? Are you satisfied to leave the outcome of this debate to our scientists and the moral extremists? For instance:

- Technological innovation makes it increasingly possible to control heredity through genetic engineering. Should society limit how far we push genetic manipulation?

- Biobanking (physical repositories of human tissues and DNA, often accompanied by donor's personal information) present enormous potential benefits to organ transplant recipients and patients needing innovative medicines. But are there sufficient controls to prevent black market sales of human organs and other misuse of biobank tissues and confidential donor information?

Join Dr. Arthur Caplan for an engaging breakfast discussion of these and other complex and hotly debated topics. Dr. Caplan's eloquent and affable style promise to make this another memorable event. Please register early, as Dr. Caplan's last presentation to the WCNC--"The Bioethics of Stem Cell Research"--was a sold-out event!
