ANALYTICS AT WHARTON SERIES: INCENTIVIZED RESUME RATING - A NEW TOOL TO ELIMINATE BAIS IN HIRING
Thursday, October 15, 2020

Led be Professor Corinne Low. Description TBA.

Speaker:

Professor Corinne Low
is an Assistant Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School, specializing in labor and development economics.  Her research brings together applied microeconomic theory with lab and field experiments to understand the determinants of who gets how much across gender and age lines. Current ongoing projects focus on a new technology to examine hiring discrimination, the tradeoff women make between career and family in the US, and the impact of teaching girls negotiation skills in Zambia.

This 2nd webinar in the 4-part Analytics at Wharton Series will discuss hidden bias in the resume evaluation process and how even diversity-seeking firms may unwittingly be hampering their efforts. Drawing from research published in the American Economic Review, this session will introduce a new tool that can be used to measure bias in the types of prestigious firms that aim to increase their diversity and have not been typically targeted in “resume audit” studies that measure discrimination. Participants will learn the surprising results of this research on the gaps that remain even among elite firms. The potential pitfalls of machine learning and a path forward to create algorithms without baking in historical bias will also be discussed.  Eric Bradlow, Vice Dean of Analytics, K.P. Chao Professor, Professor of Marketing, Statistics, Education and Economics and Chairperson Wharton Marketing Department will moderate Q&A.
