Entrepreneur Series: Philz Coffee - The Art of the Start - One Cup at a Time

Coffee with a different spin: Learn from Jacob Jaber, CEO and owner of Philz Coffee how he plans to build a global brand through culture, philosophy, people, and care.

Philz Coffee - A San Francisco Coffee Shop may soon challenge Starbucks; one cup at a time.
Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Coffee with a different spin and the label "handmade": Jacob Jaber, CEO and owner of Philz Coffee invites the Wharton Club to his newly opened flagship store in Palo Alto downtown to hear his story on how he got started and expanded to now 10 locations and multiple partners such as Google, Virgin America (yes, you can enjoy Pilz coffee on your flight from San Francisco to JFK!) Zynga, and others. Of course, Jacob and his fantastic staff will also serve a wide variety and flavors of coffee and other delicious items so that the story can not only be heard but also tasted. Philz strategy is to offer a large variety of rare "handmade"  as a way to compete with global standardization; back to giving choice to the customer.

In particular, Jacob will discuss:
  • Go to market success: Secrets to approaching large companies such as Virgin America, Google, Yelp, Apple and others and strike deals as a start-up.
  • Jacob's path to entrepreneurship and lessons learned: Father and son growth company that now has 10 outlets and many fans that love the product and service. How do you make a product that customers love and want?
  • Philz coffee's culture and how it will help the company to scale and stay true to its philosophy: Learn how Jacob and Phil created a unique pattern of culture through philosophy, people and care that enchants customers.

Philz Coffee was founded in 2003 in San Francisco by Phil Jaber. Philz Coffee takes a different approach on coffee and business. All coffee is made one cup at a time using a handcrafted method and made using Phil's secret recipe blends which took 25+ years to create. After opening its doors, Philz Coffee immediately became a huge hit. Philz now has 10 locations around the bay area with plans to expand around the bay area and eventually the world. Philz also has a thriving online and wholesale business including customers like Google, Facebook, Zynga, Virgin America, Yelp, Whole Foods, Fairmont, and many more respected brands known worldwide! The reason Philz Coffee is successful is only because of a few things, a few things that Phil and his son Jacob believe in and put all their energy and focus on. It's a combination of culture, philosophy, people, and care. Jacob, who has run the business from the beginning at the age of 18 and is currently CEO of Philz Coffee, is honored to speak to the Wharton group about Philz philosophies business practices and culture.

Jacob Jaber, CEO and Owner, Philz Coffee
Jacob was born December 29 1986, in San Francisco, California. Jacob began checking customers out at the age of 12 in his father’s (Phil) grocery store, Gateway Wine & Spirits. He attended high school in South San Francisco and college for two weeks before deciding that this wasn't the path he wanted to take. Jacob has always been an advocate of higher education and he enjoys learning. He is however not an advocate of the current school system. Jacob wanted to learn what he was interested in from interesting people; for Jacob that is something he didn’t find while attending school. Jacob was also fortunate enough to meet and talk with successful business men who became his mentors and opened his eyes about how to build and run a business. Jacob stuck with his dad helping him at the grocery store which later transformed into Philz Coffee. At the age of 18, Jacob began managing his own store and then became CEO of Philz Coffee. Now at the age of 24, Jacob and his father have built Philz Coffee to be one of the most respected coffee brands in the Bay Area and voted one of the best coffee shops in the US. Together, Phil and Jacob have opened ten locations and have expanded to wholesale customers like Google, Facebook, Virgin America, Zynga and Yelp. Jacob has a big vision for Philz and plans to take the brand internationally one day.
