‘Designing within and for complexity’ with Kate Freebairn and Charlie Sutton, Nokia
Saturday, November 12, 2011

Kate and Charlie work in design leadership positions at Nokia focusing on the challenge of creating integrated experiences, inside large organizations that themselves operate within complex business ecosystems.  Within this maelstrom - they argue that the shape and workings of the design studio itself - is becoming a critical factor in determining the outcome for consumers, businesses and designers alike.

An industrial designer by training, Kate is a design generalist with a passion for collaboration, leading and being part of awesome teams. Kate’s first professional role was at a multi disciplined design consultancy. She then joined ACID, an Australian R&D company focusing on interaction and experience design. Most recently, Kate was part of the design team who created the Nokia N9/MeeGo OS. Kate is currently the Head of Nokia with Windows Phone User Experience.

Charlie studied philosophy and law, but ended up working in design strategy and mobile UX evaluation. He is fanatical about presentation design - and an omnivore of art and design in general. Charlie has worked in diverse areas within the technology industry - from safety-critical software in aerospace, enterprise systems and global telecommunications carriers - to consumer electronics, personal computing and mobile. He spent six years at Apple, before moving to Nokia and leading the development of an industry-leading design evaluation framework. Charlie is currently a Creative Lead at Nokia Advanced Design.
